Sonae brand

http://www.underconsideration.com/brandnew/archives/follow-up_sonae.php
This past April we reported on the redesign of Sonae, one of Portugal’s biggest corporations running a number of consumer products and services. The redesign, executed by Lisboa-based Ivity, was met with plenty of negative criticism from myself (I called it “annoying and unpleasant”) and our readers (racking up an impressive 88% of 1,603 votes in the “Bad” category). With a little time it seems the Sonae website has transformed into something more palatable and Ivity has provided us with a movie that explains the genesis, execution, and application of the new identity. Take a look and see if your opinion changes.
http://www.underconsideration.com/brandnew/archives/how_do_i_circle_thee_let_me_circle_the_ways.php
What started as a company producing “decorative laminates” in 1959 in Portugal, Sonae is now one of the countries largest corporations with almost 40,000 employees that work in a mind-numbing range of sectors across various Sonae-owned customer-facing operations: from food retail, to pharmacies, to clothing, to consumer electronics, to managing shopping centers, to telecommunications, to real estate. Basically, it’s hard to throw a stone in Portugal and not hit something owned or operated by Sonae. This past February it launched a new identity created by Lisboa-based Ivity Brand Corp.

The BIG PAGE of Branding & Corporate Identity Resources

http://www.logoorange.com/branding-corporate-identity.php
Design magnate Steven Gilliatt said ?[A logo] should look just as good in 15-foot letters on top of company headquarters as it does one sixteenth of an inch tall on company stationery.?
Considering everywhere a logo goes, its design and use can be some of the most important decisions a company makes.
And the logo isn't just about what's on the paper, it's part of the deep impressions a company makes on a person, the kind that become part of pop culture: "I'm a Mac person."
This kind of brand identity doesn't come easily. You have to have a clear plan for your company. You have to be consistent in your policies and actions. You have to have a vision for the idea you want in the customer's mind.
On this page you'll find some resources to help you create that vision for your company.

Famous Logo Designs

http://www.logoblog.org/wordpress/famous-logo-designers-creation/
We witness countless famous brands and their captivating logo designs but do we ever wonder whose brainchild is it that created these magnificent logo designs? Short and simple, I say: “Behind every successful brand there is a logo designer”
http://www.toxel.com/design/2008/08/20/20-famous-logo-designs/
If there is one thing that we can learn from famous logos like Nike’s “Swoosh” or FedEx logo, it is that the logo does not have to be complicated to be effective.
Hopefully, our collection of famous logo designs will help prove that simplicity is the key to a memorable logo.

No Logo Brands Globalization Resistance

Video visionado na aula de 09/12/2010.
There's a bad mood rising against the corporate brands. No Logo is the warning on the label.
In the last decade, No Logo has become a cultural manifesto for the critics of unfettered capitalism worldwide. As the world faces a second economic depression, No Logo's analysis of our corporate and branded world is as timely and powerful as ever.
Equal parts cultural analysis, political manifesto, mall-rat memoir, and journalistic exposé, No Logo is the first book to put the new resistance into pop-historical and clear economic perspective. It tells a story of rebellion and self-determination in the face of our new branded world.
O transcript pode ser consultado aqui (http://www.mediaed.org/assets/products/115/transcript_115.pdf)

Space, No Choice, No Jobs" encontra-se disponível na biblioteca da faculdade.

Guess the Famous logos

Growing up with brands all around make us believe that we can recognise our favorite logos in anycase. I don’t blame you for being over confident because I thought the same until I came across an interesting post where the author just highlighted small segments of famous logos and asked the readers to guess them.
I was surprised to see that I failed to guess couple of my favorite famous brand logos :( However; I decided to recreate this exciting idea to check how good my blog readers can be with this logo game. You might think it to be a waste of time but trust me; many of these logos can be a real challenge to guess.
Here are 20 logos in total….Let’s see how good are you with guessing well known logos and don’t leave without telling us how many of these you got right. So, your time starts NOW!!

About the Swoosh

Ficam alguns links para alguns artigos sobre o Swoosh.

All Hail the Nike Logo! Artistic Derivatives Using the Swoosh
The Nike swoosh is one of the most simplistic and easily recognizable logos in the world. It has become an integral part of the company’s identity and has helped Nike to evolve as a globally appreciated brand. The company could very well see how the brand successfully won people over and wisely decided to stick to it. Over the years, Nike has tried out different color patterns but has never parted with it’s swoosh logo.

    Logo Controversies—BP Logo

    BP Logo

How would you rebrand BP? [At Greenpeace]
    http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/files/tarsands/logo-competition.html

A few years ago, BP rebranded themselves as 'beyond petroleum'. And yet BP is pursuing 'unconventional oil' - the Canadian tar sands and deepwater drilling, despite the massive environmental damage that's being caused by their business.
That's why we want you to rebrand them. Your brief is to create a logo for BP which shows that the company is not 'beyond petroleum' - they're up to their necks in tar sands and deepwater drilling.
The winning logo will be used by us in innovative and exciting ways as part of our international campaign against the oil company.
We're after the best ideas and concept, not necessarily the slickest logo. So if you're not a professional designer don't worry. If you're the overall winner we're offering you a day with a top graphic designer to transform your idea into a final product.

    Flicker set
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/greenpeaceuk/sets/72157623796911855/with/4752118678/

BP claim that they are 'beyond petroleum'. But this is a company that is up to its neck in the dirtiest oil going - poised to invest in the Canadian tar sands, and causing environmental catastrophe through deepwater drilling.
Their nice green logo doesn't really seem to fit them too well, so we ran a competition to find a logo that we could use to rebrand BP.
The results are displayed here. Get more information at www.greenpeace.org.uk/logo

The KISS Principle—too many elements spoil the logo

    http://www.logoblog.org/wordpress/spoiled-logo-design-mistakes/
We’ve heard of the old proverb “Too many cooks spoil the broth”, but there is a new maxim that logo designers must ponder … “Too many elements spoil the logo”. Sometimes, it is difficult to realize as to what makes a memorable logo? There is no arguing the fact that simplicity and minimalism is the key to perfection. As the great Leonardo da Vinci himself puts it…Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KISS_principle
KISS is an acronym for the design principle "Keep it simple, Stupid!".[1] Other variations include "keep it short and simple"[2] or "keep it simple and straightforward".[3] The KISS principle states that simplicity should be a key goal in design, and that unnecessary complexity should be avoided.

    Fifa logo evolution

    http://www.logoblog.org/wordpress/fifa-logo-evolution/
Football (popularly known as Soccer in the US) is the most passionately watched sports in the world. The FIFA World Cup launched in 1930 and is repeated after every four years, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 (due to World Wars). Each World Cup has been accompanied by a fresh logo design which serves as its official insignia.
The 19th FIFA World Cup is underway with full furor in South Africa. Although the FIFA 2014 logo has also been unveiled, a total of 18 dead logos of previous FIFA World Cups have amassed so far. Let us take a quick recap of all the logos featured by FIFA in the coveted contest from the inaugural 1930 to the upcoming 2014 in Brazil.
Here is the comprehensive list of all 20 World Cup logos adopted by FIFA up till 2014:

    Design Obama

O livro Designing Obama encontra-se disponível at http://digital.designing-obama.com/.
The Obama presidential campaign was innovative. For the first time in American politics, a candidate used art and design to bring together the American people—capturing their voices in a visual way.
The Design Director of the Obama campaign, Scott Thomas, has collaborated with artists and designers to create Designing Obama, a chronicle of the art and design from the historic campaign. Get the inside story on how design was used by the campaign, and scope out the pieces, created unofficially, by grassroots supporters.
The 360-page book is full-color and hardbound, highly crafted with an embossed sleeve. Forewords written by Steven Heller and Michael Bierut.

    Designing Obama

Dubbed a strategic and smart campaign by Fast Company, the Obama brand has received much recognition not only within the design community, but also throughout the nation and abroad. Sol Sender and Scott Thomas, creators of the official Obama logo and Web site, will describe their experiences developing this historic political brand. The event features a special exhibition of posters from Threadless Loves Democracy, a challenge to design the most unique and conceptual call to vote, sponsored by Sappi Fine Paper, Threadless, Rock the Vote, and Jones Soda. The conversation will be moderated by Paul Schmelzer, editor of the Minnesota Independent news site, author of the blog Eyeteeth, and contributor to Adbusters, Cabinet, Ode, Utne Reader, and other journals focusing on the intersection of art, media, and politics.

    From Pencil to PDF

Logo Design Love é um livro de leitura muito acessível sobre design de logos, cujo capítulo "From Pencil to PDF" está disponível online aqui e cuja leitura se recomenda, pois diz respeito à etapa em que o vosso trabalho se encontra.
To be a good designer, you must be curious about life; the strongest ideas are born from the experiences we have and the knowledge we gain from them. The more we see and the more we know, the more ammunition we can stockpile for generating ideas.
I’m frequently asked how to integrate this stockpile into actual logo concepts, and that’s what we’re going to focus on in this chapter. We’ll look at the two vital steps in this process— mind-mapping and sketching—and then talk about what to include when preparing your presentation PDFs for the client.
